    Date: Feb 2, 2012

A steam leak within a newly replaced generator at the San Onofre nuclear plant is raising the prospect that small traces of radioactive gas may have reached the atmosphere, though without any significant danger to workers or the public.
Air extractors apparently carried small traces of radioactive gas from the generator area to an unsealed auxiliary building outside a reactor dome, setting off radiation alarms, Victor Dricks, a spokesman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said on Wednesday. [...]
Southern California Edison spokesman Gil Alexander said he could not confirm those details but did not dispute the account. [...]

Radioactive Iodine-131 detected by Sweden, Norway, Finland — “Most likely a reactor or a isotope-source at a hospital”

    More Details
    • Measurements of radioactive iodine in northern part of the Barents Region were made several days ago
    • Results of the analyses were first made public Tuesday evening by coordinated press-notes from radiation authorities in Finland, Sweden and Norway
    • Two of the six online measuring stations in Finnmark in the high north of Norway have indicated increased levels of radioactive iodine
    • Swedish radiation protection authority says in thier brief that very low levels of radioactive iodine-131 are meassured at their station in Kiruna in northern Sweden
    • The source is most likely a reactor or a isotope-source at a hospital, according to the press-note from NRPA
    • Calculations made by NRPA show that the observed radioactive substances are transported by air from southeast, that means from, or through Russian territory

Now it’s twenty-three years later, and Gwen earns a living doing the same kind of work that the men at Three Mile Island did. She requested this Ideas documentary from Winnipeg. It originally aired on October 13th, 1986.
    Transcript Summary
    • Reports we are getting say infant mortality rates doubled
    • More important is the enormous increase in cancer deaths in children in the four counties surrounding TMI compared to the numbers previous to the accident that the health department listed even on say leukemia
    • Animals and plants damaged substantially
    • We have done an in-depth report on plant life
    • We are seeing many mutations
    • We saw the leaves the first year
    • All the birds on the farm disappeared
    • The trees, it looked like winter
    • Not only did we see complete defoliation, we saw trees defoliated at different levels

In July 2011, the researchers identified and counted birds at 300 locations in Fukushima Prefecture, ranging from 15 to 30 miles from the damaged nuclear complex. Largely still open to human occupation, these areas had external radiation levels from 0.5 to 35 microsieverts per hour.
Overall, the bird community as a whole was significantly diminished in the more contaminated areas.
Moreover, the team compared the results to a similar study they undertook in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone from 2006 through 2009. For 14 species of birds found in both locations, the diminution of population size from increased radiation dose was more pronounced at Fukushima than Chernobyl.
According to co-author Timothy Mousseau, a biologist in the University of South Carolina’s College of Arts and Sciences, this suggests that “these birds, which have never experienced radiation of this intensity before, may be especially sensitive to radioactive contaminants.”
However, when comparing all birds, including the species that are not common to both areas, the overall strength of the negative relationship was stronger in Chernobyl than in Fukushima. The authors believe that this may reflect the fact that many species in the most contaminated regions of Chernobyl have now almost completely disappeared.
The study, among the first published scientific reports concerning impacts on terrestrial animal populations in Fukushima, suggests that there are many similarities between the Chernobyl and Fukushima events and provides new insight into the first-generation effects of radiation exposure on animals in the wild. “Our results point to the need for more research to determine the underlying reasons for differences among species in sensitivity, both initially and following many generations of exposure,” said Mousseau.
Although these early data are critical for setting a baseline, Mousseau added that it’s imperative that “large-scale studies be initiated in Fukushima immediately to make the research potentially much more revealing.”
The research was co-sponsored by QIAGEN GmbH, The Samuel Freeman Charitable Trust, the CNRS (France), and the University of South Carolina.

Concerns about safety and the durability of components at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station are continuing to surface as the plant approaches a full week of complete shutdown. The plant’s Unit 3 reactor was taken out of commission after a radioactive water leak was discovered on January 31, while Unit 2 was already down for scheduled maintenance. The Unit 1 reactor was taken offline permanently in 1992.

Have you seen this yet? The highly respected International Journal of Health Services says that 14,000 U.S. deaths can be attributed to Fukushima radiation

Virtually every agency (including the EPA) minimized the impact from radiation through the entire crisis. Now we have a peer-reviewed study revealing that they were f.o.s. all along

"This study of Fukushima health hazards is the first to be published in a scientific journal. It raises concerns, and strongly suggests that health studies continue, to understand the true impact of Fukushima in Japan and around the world. Findings are important to the current debate of whether to build new reactors, and how long to keep aging ones in operation."

[...] Last August, [Hideo Yamazaki, a professor of environmental analysis at Kinki University] sampled seabed mud at four locations near the mouth of Arakawa river in Tokyo Bay. [...]
The cesium deposit had a maximum density of 18,242 becquerels per square meter. That is 25 times greater than the peak cesium density in the mud in Lake Biwako, Shiga Prefecture, due to fallout from atmospheric nuclear tests in the past. [...]
Large amounts of cesium flow in from rivers and accumulate on the seabed. The rate of that process will peak 1-2 years from now, Yamazaki said.

    Title: UCB Milk Sampling Results
    Source: UCBDepartment of Nuclear Engineering
    Date: Feb 6, 2012
2/6/2012 (2:31pm): A new milk sample has been measured, this one with a best-by date of 2/16/2012. The results are posted to the milk sample page. Low levels of both Cs-134 and Cs-137 were still detected in the sample.
    Best Buy Date of 02/16/2012:
    • Cs-134 @ 0.052 Bq/L
    • Cs-137 @ 0.115 Bq/L

    0.167 Bq/L of radioactive cesium = 4.526 picocuries/L (1 Bq = 27.1 picocuries)
The EPA Maximum Contaminant Level for radioactive cesium in milk is 3 picocuries/L:
“EPA lumps these gamma and beta emitters together under one collective MCL [Maximum Contaminant Level], so if you’re seeing cesium-137 in your milk or water, the MCL is 3.0 picocuries per liter; if you’re seeing iodine-131, the MCL is 3.0; if you’re seeing cesium-137 and iodine-131, the MCL is still 3.0.” -Forbes.com
These are the highest cesium levels detected by UCB since at least August 2011 (As the MDA was higher over the summer, it’s hard to be sure of the exact levels at that time):
